sound : motion sequencer

motion sequencer documentation

My aim was to program a sound sequencer with different tracks and with the sounds being triggered by motion.

The sound that is made by the sequencer will sound rubbery. You can see more about the sound concept here.

layout This is a sketch of the setup, the camera needs to be mounted on a high ceiling, pointing down. It needs to be high enough that four people can fit in the width of the camera's screen. It would also work better if the lights were high, this will prevent shadows from interfering with the interaction.
tracks

The software is created using Max MSP, it divides the camera screen into 12 squares; a grid of 4 by 3.

Each row of horizontal squares produces a different track of sound. The vertical columns of squares are on a timer and keep a beat from left to right.

Different direction of movement within each square changes the sound's pitch.

video demo

This video demonstrates how the software works. The top row of buttons represent the tempo and each beat of the sequencer. The rest of the buttons represent the 12 interactive areas, they light up when movement in that area triggers a sound.

Sounds are triggered when movement occurs in the same vertical column that the sequencer's timer is at.
